Choghadiya today

Eight parts of the day and eight of the night, each with a ruling graha and a traditional quality. Derived from actual sunrise, so the boundaries move with the season and the city.

The eight qualities

Amrit, Shubh and Labh are treated as favourable; Char is neutral; Kaal, Rog and Udveg are avoided. The quality follows the ruling planet, which is why the same name recurs at different times on different weekdays.

Questions

What is choghadiya?

Choghadiya divides daylight into eight parts and the night into eight more, each ruled by a planet and carrying that planet's classical quality. Amrit, Shubh and Labh are counted auspicious; Kaal, Rog and Udveg are not; Char is neutral.

How long is one choghadiya?

About 90 minutes, but never exactly — it is one eighth of actual daylight, so it stretches in summer and shortens in winter, and differs between cities on the same day.

About these timings

The figures on this page are astronomical calculations: positions of the Sun and Moon worked out for your city and date. Those are measurements, and they are as exact as the ephemeris behind them.

What the traditions take each one to MEAN — auspicious, inauspicious, favourable for a particular act — is tradition, recorded here as tradition. Nothing on this page is a prediction, and nothing on it is financial advice.
